Canada is facing a challenge in revoking the citizenship of Tahawwur Hussain Rana, accused of planning the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, due to changes in citizenship legislation.

The Canadian government has asked a Federal court to revoke Rana's citizenship, but the case remains unresolved.

Rana was convicted of terrorism-related charges and extradited to India, but his citizenship cannot be revoked due to his alleged role in planning the attacks.

However, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is attempting to prove that Rana obtained Canadian citizenship through deception, as he claimed to be resident in Ottawa but spent most of the time in Chicago, US.

The revocation process typically takes a decade, and the attempt to revoke Rana's citizenship has only commenced in May 2024.

Experts have criticized the Canadian government for being slow to revoke Rana's citizenship, highlighting systemic failures in vetting, verification, enforcement, and political accountability.
