People in western Europe sweltered through a record-breaking heatwave, with temperatures set to soar even further. A 'heat dome' of warm air from northern Africa pushed the mercury well above normal levels for May, prompting some Europeans to consider getting air conditioning.

From London's beaches to Paris's fountains, people sought relief from the sun, with temperatures reaching as high as 35.1C in the UK and 39C in some areas of France. The heatwave is expected to last through the week, with scientists warning of the dangers of human-driven climate change.

At least seven deaths have been linked to the heatwave in France, with many more seeking relief at water spots. Authorities in Britain reported four teen drownings since Sunday, and a record May temperature of 28.8C was recorded in Ireland.

The extreme heat is also affecting work, with fruit growers in southern France worried about a sharp drop in production due to the fluctuation in temperature.
