Google software engineer Hong (Jason) Wi has taken the concept of a 'supercommuter' to a new level. Living in Seattle while working at Google's Mountain View headquarters, Wi flies back and forth almost every week, spending approximately ₹2.8 lakh a month.
Wi, who originally hails from South Korea, moved to the US when he was 16 and has been balancing two rents and a grueling travel schedule ever since. He works on Google Flow, an AI image and video generation product, and has his own side project, a newsletter with 500 subscribers.
Wi's travel schedule is usually Monday and Tuesday to Thursday and Friday, with flights from Seattle to San Jose and back. He spends around $3,000 a month on everything, including rent, flights, and Uber.
Wi chose to fly every week to chase his own growth, support his partner's career, and keep their relationship together. Despite the financial sacrifice, he believes what he's getting out of this is worth far more than what it costs.
