Democrat Senate candidate Graham Platner's campaign has been thrown into turmoil after his wife, Amy Gertner, provided campaign officials with sexually explicit text messages to multiple women, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The revelations emerged just days after Platner announced his candidacy for the US Senate seat in Maine.
According to reports, Gertner alerted members of Platner's campaign about the messages she described as sexually explicit, which she discovered on Platner's phone during an opposition investigation.
Genevieve McDonald, a former state legislator who served as the political director for the Platner campaign, stated that Gertner contacted her a few days before a significant Labor Day rally with Senator Bernie Sanders, expressing concern that Platner's actions might turn into a political liability.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Platner's wife shared evidence she believed campaign officials should review, including sexually explicit text messages with as many as a dozen women.
Platner's campaign has been plagued by controversies, including the revelation of purported posts he made on Reddit, where he allegedly made offensive remarks about sex workers and minimized sexual assault.
Platner has since apologized for his past comments and has been candid about his struggles with alcoholism, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder related to his military service.
