India's Ambassador-designate to China, Vikram Doraiswami, has arrived in Beijing to take up his new assignment, receiving a warm welcome from senior Chinese and Indian officials.

Doraiswami, a 1992-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, succeeds Pradeep Kumar Rawat and has previously served as India's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.

His appointment in March this year has generated considerable interest in the Chinese official media and strategic community, with his Chinese name, 'Wei Jiameng', meaning 'one who forms an excellent alliance', carrying diplomatic significance.

Doraiswami, a Mandarin speaker, has served at both the Hong Kong and Beijing diplomatic missions early in his career and is expected to add momentum to the current normalisation process of Sino-India relations.
