A day after US President Donald Trump expressed optimism about a potential agreement with Iran, the White House has walked back those comments, citing ongoing negotiations and 'back and forth' on specific details.

A senior US official told Axios that the White House now believes a deal might take several days to get approval from Tehran's leadership, including Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.

The official noted that the details of the agreement are still under negotiation, and no deal is expected to be signed on Sunday, according to CNN.

The delay is attributed to the 'slow and opaque' nature of Iran's decision-making system, as well as ongoing discussions over key issues such as Iran's nuclear program.

While both sides have made progress and a deal is near, they have also remained cautious, with Iran's Tasnim news agency warning that the deal may be derailed due to alleged US 'obstruction'.
