Israel has announced plans to cut ties with the United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, in a symbolic move to protest its inclusion on an annual report about sexual violence in conflict zones.
The decision comes after Israel was listed alongside Hamas and other terrorist organizations in the report, which found "credible information of violations by Israeli armed and security forces, perpetrated against Palestinians in several prisons, a detention centre and military base."
Israeli Ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, said the country is freezing relations with Guterres' office, but remains a member of the UN and can interact with several of its bodies separately.
The move is seen as a further strain on the already fractured relationship between the UN and the Israeli government, which has historically had a strained relationship with top UN officials and the organization as a whole.
