After the US and Iran signed a peace deal, Israel has expressed its unwillingness to withdraw its troops from southern Lebanon, citing concerns over the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah.

Israeli officials have reportedly held 'stubborn' conversations with the US over continuing its deployment of troops in southern Lebanon, with the outcome depending on President Trump's decision to force the issue.

Iran had pushed for Israel to move out of 'security zones in Lebanon' as a condition of the deal, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has insisted that this is a 'critical issue' for Israel's national security.

Netanyahu has also reiterated his stance that as long as he is prime minister, Iran will not obtain a nuclear weapon, and Israeli troops will remain in the buffer zone in southern Lebanon 'for as long as necessary.'
