Karmelo Anthony, a 19-year-old convicted of murdering Austin Metcalf, has submitted an appeal claiming he cannot afford legal representation.
Anthony was found guilty of murder and sentenced to 35 years in prison for the killing of 17-year-old Metcalf in Frisco, Texas, in April 2025.
A court document obtained by WFAA suggests that Anthony claimed he lacked financial resources and requested the judge to appoint an attorney for his appeal.
A previous online fundraiser had raised over $615,000 to support his legal defense, but was removed after his conviction.
The incident occurred when Metcalf asked Anthony to vacate a tent, leading to a confrontation and Metcalf's stabbing in the chest.
Anthony claimed he acted in self-defense, but controversy emerged due to the absence of Black jurors in the selection process.
