A group of villagers has been trapped in a flooded cave in central Laos since last week, with rescue operations underway to pull them out safely.

Thai rescuers arrived at the site on Sunday to provide assistance, while divers have begun navigating flooded sections of the cave to locate the trapped group.

The cave is a very narrow chamber, often visited by nearby villagers searching for gold deposits, and authorities had warned them against entering due to safety concerns.

Rescue teams from Laos and Thailand are working together, with around 100 people on the site, to pump water out of the cave and locate the trapped villagers.

The status of the seven people trapped remains unknown, with rescuers appealing for specialist personnel and equipment to aid efforts.
