A devastating fire in Manhattan's Inwood neighborhood has claimed three lives and left over a dozen people injured. The three-alarm blaze erupted at an apartment complex on Dyckman Street early Monday morning, prompting a massive response from the FDNY.
More than 190 firefighters and EMS personnel were deployed to the scene, where they encountered intense flames and struggled to rescue trapped residents.
Resident Rita Vega described the harrowing experience of being awakened by the fire alarm and the cries of people.
A total of 14 people, including one firefighter, received treatment from EMS, with five transported to the hospital in critical condition.
Fire Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore emphasized the importance of residents closing their doors in the event of a fire, citing that apartments with closed doors suffered minimal damage.
The Red Cross is assisting those displaced by the fire, with approximately 100 people forced to seek temporary shelter.
