A man accused of killing a Virginia sheriff's deputy during a welfare check has been taken into custody in North Carolina. Michael Puckett was apprehended in Surry County after a massive multi-agency manhunt.

The Carroll County Sheriff's Office announced Puckett's capture, thanking neighboring law enforcement agencies and the community for their assistance.

Deputy Logan Utt was shot and killed during the welfare check on May 29. A second deputy was struck but survived.

Puckett fled on foot after the shooting and was captured on a wildlife camera the next morning.

The Virginia State Police, FBI, and multiple law enforcement agencies were involved in the search operation.
