A meteor estimated to be as heavy as an elephant and 5 feet wide exploded over the northeastern United States, causing loud sonic booms and rattling homes in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
The meteor, which was traveling at an estimated 42,000 mph, entered the atmosphere on May 30 and broke apart several miles above New England, releasing energy equivalent to around 230 tons of TNT.
The blast was powerful enough to rattle windows and shake homes, alarming residents and sparking widespread speculation about its cause.
NASA officials confirmed that the object was natural material rather than a satellite or piece of space debris.
