Karmelo Anthony, a Texas teenager convicted of murdering fellow student Austin Metcalf, has formally begun the appeals process following his 35-year prison sentence.
Attorney Donny Perales, a McKinney-based lawyer associated with Chesley & Perales, has been appointed to represent Anthony during the appeal.
Perales has extensive experience handling criminal defense matters in Texas courts and has practiced law for over two decades.
Anthony's appeal does not overturn the verdict or alter his sentence, but preserves his right to seek review from a higher court.
The Fifth Court of Appeals in Dallas will evaluate whether legal errors occurred during the trial that could justify relief.
