Israeli lawmakers have voted in favour of a bill to dissolve the Knesset, paving the way for fresh elections in the country. The move comes as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces mounting pressure from ultra-Orthodox parties and Israeli citizens, with his right-wing coalition on the brink of collapse.

The parliamentary vote, which saw around 120 lawmakers in favour of the bill, is a significant blow to Netanyahu, who is already facing a corruption trial and growing dissatisfaction among the public.

Netanyahu's popularity has tanked, especially after the 2023 Hamas attack and the launch of the war on Gaza, with many Israelis blaming him for the security failure that enabled the militant group to attack Israel.

With elections set to be held within 90 days, Netanyahu's chances of retaining power appear to be slipping, with some polls suggesting he could lose the upcoming national election.
