Chris Nanos, the Pima County Sheriff, is facing intense scrutiny after reportedly skipping a public meeting where officials were expected to discuss allegations that he lied under oath about his disciplinary history.

The controversy comes amidst ongoing criticism of the sheriff's handling of the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Savannah Guthrie, who vanished from her Arizona home earlier this year.

According to reports, Nanos testified in a 2024 lawsuit that he had never been suspended during his law enforcement career, but records later revealed that he had been suspended multiple times while serving with the El Paso Police Department in Texas decades earlier.

The disciplinary actions reportedly involved accusations including "insubordination" and "consistent inefficiency."

Nanos' attorney argued that the sheriff had been referring only to his Arizona law enforcement career when answering the question, but critics pushed back against that explanation, accusing the sheriff of repeatedly avoiding accountability.

The controversy has added to criticism surrounding the sheriff's handling of the Nancy Guthrie investigation, which has been ongoing for over 100 days with no suspect identified or arrests announced.
