An ex-Syrian general and a former senior Syrian police officer are on trial in Vienna for allegedly torturing opponents of Bashar al-Assad's regime.
The two defendants, a former brigadier general and a former head of investigations office, are accused of ordering or failing to oppose the mistreatment of protesters in Raqqa between 2011 and 2013.
They applied for asylum in Austria in 2015 and have resided there since, but now face up to 10 years in prison for charges including torture, aggravated coercion, and serious bodily harm.
Thirteen hearing days are scheduled, with alleged victims from Syria and Europe expected to testify.
