Elizabeth Jean Carroll, a former magazine columnist, is facing a criminal investigation from the Justice Department after accusing Donald Trump of sexual assault.

The investigation focuses on whether Carroll committed perjury when delivering her testimony in two lawsuits against the Republican president.

Carroll has filed two civil lawsuits against Trump, accusing him of sexual assault and defamation.

One lawsuit alleges that Trump sexually abused Carroll in a New York department store in the mid-1990s, while the other claims that Trump defamed Carroll by denying the assault and accusing her of fabricating the story to boost book sales.

Prosecutors are questioning Carroll's 2022 deposition, in which she stated that she received no outside funding for her lawsuit, but it later emerged that billionaire Reid Hoffman had footed some of her legal bills.

Carroll has been awarded millions in damages from juries, but Trump is appealing the verdicts, including a $5 million award in the sexual abuse case and an $83 million award in the defamation case.
