A 3-year-old boy was critically injured at a UK zoo after being forced into a crocodile enclosure by an apparent stranger, who was later arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

The incident occurred at Johnsons of Old Hurst in Huntingdon, a family-run zoo outside Cambridge, on Thursday at 1:30pm local time.

According to police, the boy was taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge with serious injuries and is currently in a critical but stable condition.

A 30-year-old man from Norfolk was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and police do not believe he and the child are known to each other.

The zoo has closed its Tropical House until further notice and is praying for the boy and his family.
