The International Labour Organization (ILO) has blocked the appointment of Trump administration official Sheng Li as its deputy director-general due to the US's failure to pay its dues.

The ILO cited continued delays in payment of arrears, amounting to over 173 million Swiss francs, as the reason for rescinding Li's appointment.

Li, a high-level official at the US Department of Labor, was set to assume the position in July.

The US is not the only country behind on its payments to the ILO, but it is the largest contributor in assessed contributions.

The ILO remains in dialogue with the US government on the matter and has not ruled out the possibility of the US settling its arrears and regaining its position.
