Vice President JD Vance announced Thursday that the US Navy has lifted a blockade on Iranian ports, allowing more than a dozen ships to pass through as part of an agreement to end the war.
According to Vance, more than 12.5 million barrels of oil flowed through the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday night, marking an immediate benefit of the deal.
Vance downplayed criticism that the agreement favors Iran, citing it as a necessary step to end hostilities and restart talks over Tehran's nuclear program.
He also warned US critics in Israel against "attacking the only powerful ally" it has left, lashing out at members of the Israeli government.
The agreement, which calls for a permanent end to hostilities and a 60-day negotiating clock to reach a final deal on Iran's nuclear program, appears to offer Iran several benefits up front while extracting little in return.
Major shipowners have begun moving vessels through the Strait of Hormuz since the agreement was signed, with tankers controlled by major companies passing through the strait.
