A US Treasury official has warned Oman against helping Iran impose tolls on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, threatening aggressive action against any actors involved.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the US will not tolerate any effort to impose a tolling system in the strategic waterway, and accused Iran of attempting to disrupt global maritime trade.

The warning comes after US President Donald Trump rejected the idea of any temporary arrangement that would allow Iran and Oman to jointly oversee movement through the Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait of Hormuz has remained at the centre of tensions between Iran and the United States throughout the West Asia conflict due to its importance to global energy shipments.

The US has imposed sanctions on the newly introduced Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA), accusing Iran of attempting to extort commercial vessels travelling through the Strait of Hormuz and funnel revenues to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
