The suspect who opened fire at a White House security checkpoint has died, federal officials said. The incident occurred on Saturday evening, shortly after 6 pm ET, when a person approached a checkpoint and began firing at posted officers.

Officers shot the suspect following an exchange of gunfire, during which a bystander was also wounded. However, it's unclear whether the bystander was hit by the suspect's bullets or those fired in return by the officers.

The incident took place at the corner of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest, just outside the White House complex. FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that agency personnel were on the scene and supporting the Secret Service.

A large police presence was seen at the site of the incident, with dozens of gunshots reported. The lockdown was later lifted around 6:45 PM ET.
