Amy Gertner, the wife of Senate hopeful Graham Platner of Maine, has released a statement after reports surfaced that she had previously alleged her husband exchanged sexually explicit texts with other women during their marriage.

Gertner stated that she confided in someone she considered a friend, who then spread malicious gossip about her and her husband's marriage.

Gertner emphasized that she knows her husband and that their marriage is stronger than ever, despite the controversy surrounding Platner's past racist, sexist, and homophobic online posts, as well as a now-covered-up tattoo of a Totenkopf, recognized as a Nazi symbol.

The controversy comes as Platner vies to unseat five-term Republican senator Susan Collins in the upcoming election.
