In a shocking case of elder abuse, a 35-year-old school dropout has been arrested in Ahmedabad for allegedly scamming senior citizens out of lakhs of rupees with a fake treatment to improve their mobility. The suspect, Mohammad Amjad, posed as a doctor and physiotherapist, convincing elderly individuals with mobility issues that they were suffering from 'black blood' in their bodies. He claimed that this 'black blood' could be removed through a special treatment, charging ₹7,000 for each drop extracted. The scam came to light after a bank manager in Ahmedabad alerted the police about a senior citizen withdrawing large sums of money from a fixed deposit. A police team reviewed CCTV footage, identifying Amjad surveilling the elderly customer. Further questioning led to the detection of the fraud, with ₹6.7 lakh recovered. Amjad, a resident of Rajasthan's Baran district, has a Class 6 education. He targeted elderly individuals living alone, approaching them at public locations and claiming to offer a cure for their pain, paralysis, or difficulty walking. The victims were convinced that removing the 'black blood' would cure their condition, with Amjad charging ₹7,000 per drop. The police are now searching for the other gang members, who posed as an engineer, a doctor, and a medical assistant. The case highlights the vulnerability of elderly individuals to scams and the importance of vigilance in detecting such cases.
