The Andaman and Nicobar Islands Police are taking significant steps to upgrade their commando unit, a move aimed at enhancing combat readiness in the face of challenging terrain and strategic importance. The force currently boasts 121 commandos, with plans to further strengthen the unit. To achieve this goal, the police have invested in a state-of-the-art training facility, complete with 10 newly constructed commando obstacles at the Police Training School in Prothrapur. The obstacles are designed to test recruits' physical endurance, agility, and tactical skills, preparing them to handle demanding operational conditions. The need for such a facility became apparent when police personnel had to be sent to the mainland for commando training. Now, with the setup of this advanced training unit, the police aim to prepare both new recruits and in-service personnel to effectively respond to emerging law and order challenges, disaster scenarios, and emergency situations. The force is also exploring the possibility of establishing a women commando unit, with plans to have a sizeable number of women commandos in the police force in the future. Currently, the Andaman and Nicobar Police have 14 drill instructors trained in commando courses, and around 30 recruits are undergoing basic training. The enhanced training infrastructure is expected to benefit both new constables and in-service personnel, providing realistic and scenario-based training that will equip them to tackle the unique challenges of the islands.
