A wave of violence swept through Assam's Kokrajhar district on Tuesday, as clashes erupted between members of the Bodo and Adivasi communities. The clashes were sparked by an incident on Monday evening, in which a vehicle carrying construction workers from the Bodo community was stopped by a mob on suspicion of cattle theft. The driver reportedly hit two Adivasi people, leading to a confrontation that turned violent. Two people, identified as Sikhna Jwhwlao Bismit and Sunil Murmu, succumbed to their injuries, while four others were hospitalized. The situation quickly escalated, with members of both communities blocking the National Highway, burning tyres, and setting fire to houses and a government office. The police outpost in Karigaon was also attacked, prompting police to fire blank rounds to restore order. In response to the violence, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma deployed the Rapid Action Force (RAF) and temporarily suspended internet services in Kokrajhar and Chirang districts. Sarma appealed for cooperation from community leaders and politicians, urging everyone to assist in restoring peace and normalcy. The Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) chief, Hagrama Mohilary, described the incident as unfortunate and suggested that a 'third force' was behind the violence. He urged people not to be provoked or engage in further violence. The police have launched an investigation into the incident and have arrested 19 people so far. Senior Superintendent of Police Akshat Garg stated that more arrests will be made based on evidence collected. The situation remains tense, with the army on standby to be deployed if necessary. The government is working to restore order and ensure the safety of the public.
