Kokrajhar, Assam: Tensions ran high in Assam's Kokrajhar district on Tuesday, a day after a violent confrontation left one person dead. The situation escalated on Monday night when a vehicle carrying individuals from one community struck a group of people from another community on Mansingh Road in Karigaon, sparking a violent mob attack. The victims, who were associated with a road construction project, were beaten up and their vehicle was set ablaze after the mob suspected them of cattle theft. The victims, including the deceased Sikhna Jwhwlao Bismit alias Raja, were rushed to the hospital, where Raja succumbed to his injuries. Four others, Prabhat Brahma, Jubiraj Brahma, Sunil Murmu, and Mahesh Murmu, suffered serious injuries and are undergoing treatment at the Kokrajhar Medical College and Hospital. The Rapid Action Force (RAF) has been deployed to contain the situation, and internet/mobile data services have been suspended in the district to prevent the spread of inflammatory messages and rumors. The home department has taken the precautionary measure to maintain law and order in the area. The incident has raised concerns about the growing tensions between the Bodo and Adivasi communities in the region. The police have launched an investigation into the incident and have detained a few people for questioning. The situation in Kokrajhar remains volatile, with both communities blocking the National Highway and engaging in violent protests.
