Assam Unrest: Army Steps In to Quell Violence Between Bodos and Adivasis

Guwahati: In a bid to restore order, the Indian Army has been deployed in sensitive areas of Assam's Kokrajhar district, where two people lost their lives in clashes between the Bodo and Adivasi communities. The tensions escalated after a vehicle carrying three Bodos collided with two Adivasi individuals, leading to a violent backlash. The situation took a turn for the worse on Monday night, with the Bodos being beaten up and their vehicle set ablaze. One person died instantly, while another succumbed to injuries the next day. The violence continued on Tuesday, with both communities blocking the national highway, burning tyres, and attacking a government office and police outpost. The authorities responded with baton charges and tear gas, leaving several people injured. To contain the situation, the district administration has set up relief camps, imposed prohibitory orders, and suspended internet services in the area. The army's deployment is aimed at confidence-building measures, with a flag march scheduled for Wednesday. Four army columns are currently stationed in the district, with the situation largely under control.
