A public spat has erupted between entrepreneur Mohan Das Pai and Karnataka Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy over the state of Bengaluru's public transport. The controversy began when Pai, a former Infosys CFO, criticized the government's handling of public transport, accusing it of being ineffective and plagued by a shortage of buses. Pai argued that the existing system is inefficient and that allowing private bus services could improve connectivity and efficiency. He also claimed that Karnataka has lacked adequate public transport for the past three years. The entrepreneur called on Reddy to allow private buses to provide service, stating that people need public transport regardless of who provides it. Responding to Pai's criticism, Reddy challenged him to a public debate, inviting Pai to discuss the facts directly with the BMTC Managing Director. Reddy defended the performance of state-run transport corporations, highlighting their social role and commitment to serving citizens. The minister pointed out that the government's Shakti scheme, which provides free bus travel for women, has made a significant impact, with over 650 crore free trips provided so far. He also explained how state transport services balance profit and social responsibility, operating at a loss on 30% of routes to ensure connectivity for rural citizens. According to Reddy, Karnataka operates 26,054 buses, serving nearly 45 lakh passengers daily in Bengaluru alone. He claimed that the state has added over 5,800 new buses in the last two years and plans to introduce 2,000 more by March 2026. Reddy also took aim at the previous BJP government, alleging that bus purchases were halted during its tenure. The minister warned that private operators prioritize profits and may withdraw services when earnings fall, emphasizing that public transport is a right, not a luxury. The exchange highlights the ongoing debate over the role of private operators in Bengaluru's public transport system and the government's commitment to providing affordable and efficient services to citizens.
