Rejaul Karim Sarkar, former president of the All Assam Minorities Students' Union (AAMSU), has resigned from the Congress party just days after joining it. In a letter to the state Congress chief, Gaurav Gogoi, Sarkar expressed deep disappointment with the party's leadership, accusing them of acting like agents of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The controversy began when Sarkar made remarks about reorganizing Assam's districts, which sparked widespread criticism and led to protests in Sivasagar and surrounding areas. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, along with other leaders, condemned Sarkar's comments as insensitive, particularly in the context of Assam's demographic tensions. Initially, Gogoi downplayed the issue, but later apologized for Sarkar's remarks, stating that they were taken out of context. However, Sarkar's comments had already caused a stir, with many calling for his removal from the party. Sarkar, who joined the Congress citing its commitment to secularism and inclusive politics, felt alienated within the party and claimed that senior leaders did not support him during the controversy. In his resignation letter, he stated that continuing in the party would require him to compromise on his conscience, principles, and dignity. Sarkar's resignation has sparked a new debate, with Sarma accusing Gogoi of not taking strong enough action against him. The incident highlights the ongoing ideological divisions within the Congress party in Assam.
