Delhi and its surrounding areas witnessed a dramatic change in weather on Saturday, with clear skies replacing the previous day's widespread rainfall. The sudden shift in weather brought down temperatures in the city, offering a brief respite from pollution levels. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted a generally cloudy sky for Saturday, accompanied by shallow to moderate fog during the morning hours and strong surface winds reaching 10-20 kmph. However, there are no rain warnings issued for the city for the next six days. A significant drop in minimum temperatures is expected over the next three days, followed by a gradual rise. Cold northwesterly winds are anticipated to return between Saturday and Monday, leading to cooler nights. The IMD has predicted a sharp fall in temperatures on January 24, with a range of 7°C to 17°C. Mahesh Palawat, vice president at Skymet, explained that cold winds from the northwest will return due to fresh snowfall in the mountains, but their impact is expected to be limited. Another western disturbance is forecasted for January 26, which will mean that northwesterly winds will persist for around two days, resulting in a moderate dip in minimum temperatures. Delhi recorded its highest single-day rainfall in January in the past three years, with 19.8 mm of rain on Friday. The rainfall also helped improve the city's air quality slightly, although it remains in the 'poor' category. The Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 264 on Saturday morning. Gurugram was under an orange alert on Saturday due to the risk of thunderstorms, hailstorms, and strong winds. The IMD has also issued a 'yellow' warning for southern Haryana districts, including Gurugram, till Sunday due to the likelihood of dense fog and dust storms.
