New Delhi - As the India-European Union Summit approaches, the two sides are set to reaffirm their commitment to global security and multilateralism. EU officials have announced that the summit will be an opportunity for India and the EU to take on a leadership role in strengthening global security and the rules-based order amidst pressing geopolitical challenges. The Security and Defence Partnership, expected to be signed by EU foreign and security policy chief Kaja Kallas and defence minister Rajnath Singh on January 27, will enhance cooperation in maritime security operations and tackle hybrid threats. The partnership will also support collaboration between authorities and defence industries on both sides. A key highlight of the summit will be the signing of a memorandum of understanding to facilitate the mobility of students, researchers, seasonal workers, and highly skilled professionals between India and the EU. This move aims to better support Indian talent coming to Europe and cater to the labour market needs in the EU. India and the EU are also expected to announce the conclusion of negotiations for a free trade agreement (FTA) at the summit. The deal, set to be signed later this year, will create a market of two billion people and a quarter of the world's GDP. The two sides will also unveil a joint comprehensive strategic agenda till 2030, outlining cooperation in key areas such as economic security, clean energy, climate resilience, global connectivity, and mobility. EU officials have emphasized that India is a key partner for the EU, particularly as the world's largest democracy. They expect the summit to demonstrate leadership on global issues, including more trade, cooperation on security and defence, and upholding international law and multilateralism. However, the officials also acknowledged that India and the EU do not see eye-to-eye on some issues, such as the war in Ukraine. EU officials will reiterate their concerns about Russia's war of aggression and encourage India to use its leverage towards peace efforts. The summit will be attended by European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who will join Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the summit on January 27. The event follows their participation as chief guests at the Republic Day celebrations on January 26.
