In a bid to ease strained bilateral ties, Bangladesh's High Commissioner to India, Muhammad Riaz Hamidullah, has called for a renewed conversation and the creation of a 'shared space' between the two nations. Speaking at the Jaipur Literature Festival, Hamidullah emphasized the need for mutual respect, recognition, and appreciation in order to address the aspirations of both countries' growing populations. The remarks come as relations between India and Bangladesh have deteriorated in recent months, with India accusing Bangladesh of hostility towards minorities and Dhaka accusing New Delhi of spreading false narratives. The situation escalated after protests in Bangladesh over the killing of a radical student leader turned anti-India, sparking concerns over the safety of Indian citizens. In response to reports of hostility towards Hindu communities in Bangladesh, Hamidullah assured that the government has taken prompt action against such cases, and condemned the incidents as 'stray.' He also sought to differentiate the recent protests in Bangladesh from those in Iran, attributing the Bangladeshi protests to economic and social grievances. While tensions between the two nations remain high, Hamidullah's call for a 'shared space' could be a step towards easing bilateral relations. However, the road ahead remains uncertain, with both sides trading accusations and formal protests over the past few months.
