The Delhi-NCR region is bracing for harsher days as temperatures are expected to soar, with no immediate relief in sight. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an “orange” alert for Delhi, Ghaziabad, Noida, and Gurugram, warning of extreme heat and “loo” conditions.
The maximum temperature is expected to remain above 45 degrees Celsius on Thursday, with heatwave conditions forecasted to continue until May 26. The Met office has predicted strong surface winds during the afternoon and evening, with temperatures remaining above 44 degrees Celsius throughout the week.
Weather experts have warned that there is little immediate relief expected for northwestern India, with dry and hot winds blowing across Pakistan and the Thar Desert further increasing temperatures.
The extreme heat has also triggered widespread complaints of power outages across Noida and Greater Noida, with residents reporting repeated electricity disruptions, especially during nighttime.
Public notices have been issued by Paschimanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited (PVVNL) showing scheduled shutdowns being carried out in some areas of Noida due to ongoing infrastructure upgrade work.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has also issued a warning for extremely hot, dry winds, with the phrase “loo se bhi bheeshan loo” (loo winds more horrific than loo) being used to describe the conditions.
