India has taken a precautionary measure by making Bangladesh a 'non-family' posting for its diplomats due to growing security concerns. This decision follows threats from extremist and radical elements, as well as concerns about the safety of diplomats' families. The high commission in Dhaka and four assistant high commissions in Chattogram, Khulna, Rajshahi, and Sylhet will continue to operate at full strength. However, the families of officials have been advised to return to India for their safety. The move comes amid strained relations between India and Bangladesh, which have worsened since the caretaker administration took office in August 2024. The Indian government has criticized the regime for failing to protect minorities and turning a blind eye to radical group activities. Despite the tensions, India has reached out to the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), which is expected to perform well in the upcoming general election on February 12. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar recently attended the funeral of former premier Khaleda Zia and met her son Tarique Rahman, in an apparent effort to improve ties with the party. The exact timeline for the diplomats' families to return to India is unclear, and the Indian government has not disclosed the number of diplomats affected by the decision due to security concerns.
