India has responded to US President Donald Trump's claim that the country has agreed to stop buying Russian oil, emphasizing that its top priority remains ensuring energy security for its 1.4 billion population. During a press conference, India's Ministry of External Affairs stated that diversifying energy sourcing in line with market conditions and international dynamics is at the core of its strategy to guarantee energy security. The ministry clarified that all decisions are taken with this objective in mind. Trump had earlier claimed that India would stop buying Russian oil and invest in Venezuelan oil as part of a trade deal between the two countries. However, no such agreement was mentioned in the deal, which aimed to lower tariffs against Indian goods from 50% to 18%. India remains open to purchasing oil from Venezuela or other sources, depending on commercial viability. Russia, meanwhile, has stated that it has yet to receive any confirmation from India regarding halting oil purchases. The India-US trade deal is in its final stages, with a joint statement expected to be released later. The agreement has already seen a significant reduction in tariffs against Indian goods.
