India's highway travel landscape is set for a significant overhaul as the Centre gears up to ban cash payments at national highway toll plazas from April 1. Under the new system, drivers will have to use FASTag or UPI for toll payments, marking a major push towards digital travel. This move aims to alleviate traffic congestion at toll plazas, making journeys faster and more convenient. With digital payments, vehicles will no longer need to stop for cash transactions or wait for change, saving fuel and reducing waiting times. The government's goal is to modernize India's toll system by introducing a barrier-free tolling model, similar to the Multi-Lane Free Flow system used in other countries. This system enables vehicles to pass through toll areas at normal highway speeds without stopping. A successful trial run of this no-stop toll system is already underway at 25 toll plazas across the country, with the potential to expand nationwide in the future. However, vehicles without digital payment options may face delays or penalties at toll gates once the new rule comes into effect.
