In a groundbreaking move, the Andhra Pradesh government has announced the establishment of a massive green ammonia export terminal at Kakinada. This revolutionary project, powered by 7.5 GW of renewable energy and 1 GW of pumped hydro storage energy, will have a production capacity of 1.5 million tonnes per annum. The terminal, set up by AM Green, a subsidiary of the Greenko Group, will be a historic first for India, marking the country's entry into the global market for green ammonia exports. The first shipments are expected to be sent to Germany, Singapore, and Japan starting from 2028. The project, valued at a staggering US $10 billion, will create over 8,000 high-quality jobs and position Andhra Pradesh at the forefront of the global green energy value chain. Chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu is set to lay the foundation stone for the project on Saturday, accompanied by deputy chief minister Pawan Kalyan. Unlike traditional grey and blue ammonia, which is produced using coal, oil, and natural gas and contributes to carbon emissions, green ammonia is completely environment-friendly. The existing grey ammonia plant of Nagarjuna Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited is being redeveloped into a green ammonia plant through a brown field conversion. The project, spanning 495 acres, is expected to generate employment opportunities for around 2,600 people and start production by the end of 2027. AM Green has already signed an agreement with Germany-based Uniper SE to export 125 KTPA of green ammonia annually starting from 2028. The project has received support from global partners such as Malaysia-based Petronas, Singapore-based GIC, and UAE-based ADIA. In addition to the terminal, AM Green is also setting up a 2-gigawatt electrolyser manufacturing unit in Kakinada at an estimated cost of ₹2,000 crore.
