The mother of India's first female space traveler, Kalpana Chawla, has a powerful message for the country's youth. Sanjogta Kharbanda, speaking after meeting NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, emphasized the importance of parental guidance in shaping children's aspirations. Chawla's remarkable journey and achievements continue to inspire millions worldwide. Kalpana Chawla, a Haryana-born astronaut who made history as the first Indian-born woman to travel to space, pursued higher education in the United States, earning a master's degree in aerospace engineering and a doctorate in the field. Her career at NASA's Ames Research Centre in California laid the foundation for her selection as a NASA astronaut. Tragically, Chawla's second mission, STS-107, ended in disaster on February 1, 2003, when a small piece of foam struck the space shuttle Columbia's wing, causing a catastrophic loss of control. In contrast, Sunita Williams has had a distinguished 27-year career at NASA, completing three missions to the International Space Station and logging a record 608 days in space. Williams, who recently retired, has completed nine spacewalks, totalling 62 hours and 6 minutes, and was the first person to run a marathon in space. Her leadership and achievements have paved the way for future missions to the Moon and Mars, inspiring generations to push the boundaries of what is possible. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman praised Williams' contributions, stating that her work has laid the foundation for future exploration. "Suni Williams has been a trailblazer in human spaceflight, shaping the future of exploration through her leadership and paving the way for commercial missions to low Earth orbit," he said. Kharbanda's message to Indian youth is clear: with determination and encouragement, they can reach any limit. Her meeting with Sunita Williams serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of parental guidance and the boundless possibilities that lie ahead.
