In a shocking case of administrative failure, the Belagavi Deputy Commissioner has suspended a village accountant and booked four government officials for allegedly creating a false death record of a 53-year-old farmer who remains alive. The farmer, Irappa Nagappa Abbai, from Sutagatti village in Savadatti taluk, was declared dead in 2021 in government records, despite being alive. This led to the issuance of a death certificate and deprived him of government welfare schemes he was entitled to. The Lokayukta registered a case against Neela Muragod, village accountant; RS Patil, revenue inspector; Mallikarjun Heggannavar, tahsildar; and Praveen Jain, sub-divisional officer, after media reports highlighted the issue. An inquiry has been initiated to determine the responsibility behind the administrative failure. Justice Veerappa, Upa Lokayukta, stated that the suspension of Neela Muragod would not impact the ongoing case against her. The authorities are working to rectify the situation and ensure that the farmer receives the benefits he is eligible for.
