St Stephen's College has made history by appointing Professor Susan Elias as its first woman principal, marking a significant milestone in the institution's 145-year-old history.

Professor Elias, a computer scientist, will take charge from June 1 as the school's 14th principal, following a long journey towards gender parity and equality.

The college was founded in 1881 and has produced several illustrious alumnae, including Supreme Court judges, actresses, lawyers, and the Indian cricket team captain, but it has never had a female principal leading it.

Professor Elias, who has a Bachelor's degree in computer science and engineering, a Master's in multimedia technology, and a doctorate in multimedia communications, has had a long and distinguished career, focusing on teaching, research, and leadership development.

The appointment of Professor Elias has been welcomed by faculty members, former alumni, and others, who see it as a significant step towards greater gender equality and parity in the institution.
