The Income Tax Department has issued a final reminder to PAN card holders to link their PAN to Aadhaar before the December 31, 2025 deadline. Failure to do so will render unlinked PANs inoperative, causing disruptions in financial transactions and tax filings. A late fee of ₹1,000 applies to those who haven't completed the link within the stipulated timeline, but those who obtained their PAN card after October 1, 2024 using an Aadhaar enrolment ID are exempt from the penalty. To link PAN to Aadhaar, taxpayers can follow these steps: 1. Visit the income tax e-filing portal and log in with their credentials. 2. Go to the profile section and click on the ‘Link Aadhaar’ option. 3. Enter PAN and Aadhaar numbers and select ‘continue to pay through e-pay tax’. 4. Choose the relevant assessment year and select the type of payment as ‘Other Receipts’. 5. Pay the applicable amount and generate a challan. To check the link status, taxpayers can visit the income tax e-filing portal and click on ‘Link Aadhaar status’. Enter PAN and Aadhaar details to display the link status. In case of discrepancies between Aadhaar and PAN details, taxpayers can correct their Aadhaar card information on the UIDAI portal or update their PAN details on Protean (NSDL) or UTIITSL websites. Biometric verification at authorised PAN service centres can be opted for if errors persist. The Income Tax Department has urged taxpayers to complete the linking process well before the deadline to avoid penalties and disruptions in essential services.
