A controversy has erupted in Madhya Pradesh after Congress MLA Phool Singh Baraiya made remarks linking scriptures to the rape of women from lower castes and tribal communities. Baraiya, a Dalit leader, claimed that women from these groups are targeted due to a 'distorted belief system' rooted in ancient texts. In a recent media interview, Baraiya mentioned a book called Rudrayamal Tantra, which he alleged suggests that perpetrators believe sexual violence against women of certain castes brings spiritual merit. He also stated that the 'theory of rape' is that any man may commit the crime if distracted by a beautiful woman. When questioned over his remarks, Baraiya defended himself by saying that his comments were taken out of context and that he had extensively researched the topic. However, his claims have been met with fierce criticism from the BJP, which has accused the Congress of promoting a 'polluted' and 'distorted' mindset. The BJP has also targeted Congress leadership, with Madhya Pradesh BJP media in-charge Ashish Usha Agarwal calling Baraiya's remarks an insult to women. Agarwal stated that the Congress leadership must take responsibility for the MLA's comments and that such insults will not be tolerated. The controversy has sparked widespread outrage, with many questioning the validity of Baraiya's claims and the implications of his remarks. The incident has raised concerns about the safety and dignity of women from lower castes and tribal communities, who are already vulnerable to violence and exploitation.
