A 45-year-old man from Mainpuri, Azad Khan, has finally walked free from Bareilly Central Jail after spending nearly half his life behind bars. Khan was acquitted by the Allahabad High Court in a dacoity case on December 19, 2025, but his release was delayed due to procedural hurdles. Jail officials say that Khan's release was made possible after his brother, Mastan Khan, posted a personal bond of ₹20,000. The remaining ₹7,000, imposed as a fine in an earlier case, was arranged with the help of an NGO, Chhoti Si Asha, and contributions from jail staff. Khan expressed gratitude to the jail officials and staff for their assistance in securing his release. 'I will pray for them all my life for the help they gave me,' he said. Khan was released around 9 pm on Wednesday and returned to his home in Mainpuri district with his brother. Khan was initially arrested in 2001 on charges of dacoity and was sentenced to life imprisonment in a special court in Mainpuri in 2002. However, he was acquitted by the Allahabad High Court due to lack of evidence and absence of eyewitnesses. Despite being a lengthy process, Khan's release was made possible through the coordination of jail officials and the receipt of a release warrant via email.
