In a major setback for Maharashtra's prominent Thackeray and Pawar families, their attempts to unite and sway the local body polls have fallen flat. Despite high-profile rallies and joint manifestos, the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena alliance lost their stronghold in Mumbai, while the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and its ally, NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar), were trounced in Pune. In Mumbai, the Thackeray cousins had come together in a bid to protect Marathi influence in the city, but their efforts were met with a disappointing 71 seats out of 227. In contrast, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena alliance secured 118 seats. The BJP also won 89 seats in the city, marking a significant shift in the city's political landscape. In Pune, the NCP and NCP (SP) alliance failed to deliver, winning just 20 and three seats respectively, while the BJP swept the polls with 96 seats. The alliance's failure has raised questions about the impact of the Thackeray-Pawar reunion on the polls. "We respect the people's mandate, and we accept the verdict with humility," said NCP's Pune unit working president Pradeep Deshmukh. The BJP, on the other hand, attributed their victory to their focus on development and the work they carried out in the city. The results have significant implications for the future of Maharashtra politics, with the BJP's victory marking a major shift in the state's power dynamics. As the Thackeray and Pawar families reassess their strategy, the BJP is poised to play a dominant role in the state's politics for the foreseeable future.
