A dramatic police shootout unfolded in Mohali, Punjab, on Saturday morning when a gunman, Karan Pathak alias Karan Defaulter, was killed in an exchange of fire with police. Pathak, a suspect in the murder of Kabaddi promoter-cum-player Kanwar Digvijay Singh alias Rana Balachauria, had escaped from police custody on Friday night. According to Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police Harmandeep Singh Hans, Pathak had complained of chest pain and was being taken to a hospital when the police vehicle skidded on a road divider due to foggy weather. Pathak managed to flee, prompting a massive manhunt across the district. Police teams from Chandigarh, Rupnagar, and Fatehgarh Sahib were alerted, and various checkpoints were set up to trace the accused. A police team spotted Pathak in Kharar around 6:30 am on Saturday and asked him to stop, but he attempted to flee. The police team responded with gunfire, and Pathak was injured. He was initially taken to a nearby hospital but later rushed to a government hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The SSP suspects that Pathak might have procured a weapon during his 6-7 hour period on the run, which is yet to be recovered. The police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding Pathak's escape and the events leading up to the shootout. The case remains under investigation, and further details are awaited.
