A major crackdown on counterfeit vaccines has led to the arrest of one individual in India. Minister of State for Health Anupriya Patel revealed in the Rajya Sabha that the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) and State Licensing Authority had launched an investigation into the circulation of fake rabies vaccines. The probe was triggered by a complaint from Human Biologicals Institute, a division of Indian Immunologicals Limited. According to Patel, manufacturing or distributing spurious or adulterated drugs is a serious offense under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. The Union Health Ministry is working to prevent such incidents by using the Drug and Vaccine Distribution Management System, which tracks the availability of medicines across the country. The CDSCO has also issued guidelines for recalling defective drugs and has proposed the use of QR codes on vaccine products and antimicrobial substances to ensure their authenticity. The move is part of a broader effort to maintain the quality of drugs in the supply chain. The government's action against counterfeit vaccines is a significant step towards ensuring public health and safety. As the country continues to grapple with vaccine-related challenges, this crackdown serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and accountability in the pharmaceutical industry.
