In a recent development, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has directed the state government to decide within seven working days on a plea by jailed MP Amritpal Singh. Singh, who is currently detained under the National Security Act, had filed a petition seeking permission to attend the upcoming budget session of Parliament. Singh, the Waris Punjab De chief and an elected MP representing over 1.9 million constituents, claims his detention order is 'politically motivated' and aims to silence him. He argues that his continued detention undermines democratic rights and the will of the electorate. The lawmaker wants to represent his Khadoor Sahib constituency in Parliament and highlight the issues faced by his constituents. Singh won the Khadoor Sahib seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls and has been detained at Dibrugarh jail in Assam since his arrest in 2023. The High Court bench, comprising chief justice Sheel Nagu and justice Archana Puri, has directed the Punjab home secretary to decide on Singh's representation within seven working days. The outcome of this decision will have significant implications for Singh's ability to participate in the budget session, which is scheduled to begin on January 28 and conclude on April 2.
