The Supreme Court has granted bail to Kashmiri separatist leader Shabir Shah in a 2017 terror funding case, citing his long incarceration and the delay in prosecution.

A bench of justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta granted bail to Shah, but asked the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to recommend stringent conditions during the bail period.

Shah's lawyers argued that their client has remained in custody for 38 years and is very sick, requiring release on bail.

The NIA, however, called the charges against Shah grave, citing his alleged links with Pakistan-based terrorists and his role in propagating insurgency and unrest in Jammu and Kashmir.
